CEA-2006

Power ratings on Rockford Fosgate amplifiers conform to CEA-2006 industry standards. These guidelines mean your amplifier's output power ratings are REAL POWER numbers, not inflated marketing ratings.

MEHSA3

MEHSA3 reduces MOSFET temperatures, lowers distortion, increases durability and prolongs the output device life span.

MEHSA3 (Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application - gen. 3) is a proprietary process that yields up to five times better heat transfer than traditional FET mounting techniques, using the exact same components. A multi-layer insulated metal substrate operating with minimal thermal resistance spreads heat both downward & outward to quickly dissipate heat from each device across the heatsink. This process combined with our optimized heatsink designs, DSM (Discrete Surface Mount) technology and MOSFET devices, allows Rockford Fosgate to squeeze more watts per cubic inch from every output device as well as provide consistent thermal stability. The 3rd generation creates a dielectric layer between the ceramic topside and the aluminum base that retains all of the electrical isolation and capacitive coupling of the original MEHSA material increasing it's thermal conductivity. The higher power handling results in a 20% reduction in thermal impedance.

TRANS•ana

Trans•ana simplifies the signal path of the amplifier allowing the signal to travel through the amplifier at a lower voltage. The result is greater reliability and exceptional sound quality.

An award winning studio quality circuit borrowed from the pro audio company Hafler. TRANS-ana is a sound quality circuit that is a standard in the recording industry that simplifies the signal path of the amplifier, allowing the signal to travel through the amplifier at a low voltage. The result: Greater reliability, cleaner performance and exceptional musicality, speed, and durability.

  • Simplifies signal path
  • Greater reliability
  • Exceptional sound quality

DTM

Dynamic Thermal Management evenly distributes excess heat across entire amplifier heatsink.

Heat is often inefficiently dissipated across a heatsink causing "hot spots". This impacts important design goals which are:

Rockford Fosgate engineers have developed an award winning cooling design called DTM. This patent pending design seamlessly manages the output of power supply temperatures, while evenly distributing the excess heat across the entire amplifier.

  • Keeping internal components cool.
  • Maximizing potential of all components.
  • Reducing distortion for better sound quality.
  • Increasing efficiency to produce more power.

TO-247 MOSFETs

(left-OLD | right-NEW)
Rockford Fosgate amps use custom TO-247 MOSFETs. These have 60% more metal tab area for more power capacity, lower impedance and improved heat dissipation over traditional TO-220 MOSFETs found in competitor amps.

The MOSFET transistor is the best type of device to use when building a high quality mobile amplifier. The Power family departs from the traditional use of the TO-220 package MOSFET semiconductor found in most competitive brands in favor of the substantially larger TO-247 package. The TO-247 has 60% more metal tab area and its unique, fully encapsulated design is capable of housing a silicon die (the heart of the MOSFET) twice as large as the TO-220. The larger die provides more power handling capacity. Additionally, the extra metal tab area ensures that no matter what size silicon die is inside, the thermal impedance will always be lower than in the TO-220 due to improved heat dissipation.

  • 60 % more surface tab area for increased cooling
  • Larger Mosfets for extreme power handling capability and output power
  • Less heat = more reliability
  • 40 Mosfets in T30001bd!

DSM

DSM utilize 1% tight-tolerances improving efficiency of the circuit, decreases cross-talk from other discrete components and lowers operating temperature.

DSM - An industry-leading manufacturing process, DSM utilizes high-speed robotics, high-quality 1% tight-tolerance parts and large board traces. The discrete components are laser etched to meet a particular value and a very low tolerance. This lower tolerance improves the efficiency of the circuit, decreases cross-talk from other discrete components and lowers operating temperature. These superior components are used by aerospace, automotive, and cellular manufacturers.

Punch EQ2

U.S. Patent Patent Pending

Onboard equalizer with up to +18dB @ 45Hz and/or up to +12dB boost at 12kHz.

In the early 70's, Jim Fosgate studied the acoustical properties of automobiles. Utilizing a real-time analyzer and pink noise, he would graph out the acoustical characteristics of each car he tested. Jim discovered three problems that were common to all cars:

  • A midbass hump between 100-275Hz
  • A steep roll-off of high frequencies from 2kHz up to 20kHz
  • Reduced bass response below 50Hz

The Punch EQ on-board equalization circuit helps correct for these acoustical deficiencies in the listening environment. When set to Low-Pass(LP) operation, it becomes a variable Bass Boost. When set to High-Pass (HP) operation, it acts as a variable Mid-Bass and Treble Boost. When set to All Pass (AP) operation, both Bass and Treble frequencies are boosted.

NOMAD

NOMAD is a "real time" analog computer that protects your amplifier from shorting speaker wires and dangerously low speaker impedances.

This circuitry deals with the output stage protection in a Rockford Fosgate amplifier. You see, we at Rockford Fosgate think a good protection circuit is one that keeps your amp from going up in flames when the speaker wires touch together at full power, but won't shut down if the impedance of the load happens to dive when you are hammering your woofers.

The NOMAD circuit accomplishes just that. It's a totally new and very high tech method of dealing with device current and voltage parameters, without being affected by other factors such as heat. Our approach to "real time" protection is one that uses a mathematical transformation which eliminates the problems encountered with trying to do real time multiplication of instantaneous device voltage and current.

Essentially an analog computer calculates at each instant, the maximum allowable level of safe current for each output device, based on their instantaneous voltage drop. This allows the protection to be much more precise than ever before, and ensures reliability.

Compatible Woofer Configurations

The below woofer wiring diagrams are compatible with this amplifier and are designed to optimize power output. The diagrams were selected simply by choosing woofer configurations that match the amplifier's recommended speaker load. Care should be taken to select woofers with a total power rating that can safely handle the amplifier's RMS power output.
The below diagrams optimize this amp for its lowest recommended BRIDGED/MONO load.
This allows FRONT channels to run STEREO speakers while REAR channels run WOOFERS.
